Engineering the Fibonacci Series: Materials, Manufacture & Music

Wilson Benesch is regarded internationally as the reference British manufacturer of high-end loudspeakers and analogue playback systems, recognised across Europe, the USA and Asia. Designed and manufactured almost entirely in-house at the company’s factory in Sheffield, England, the Fibonacci Series is a direct expression of this approach — treating materials, structure, mechanics and acoustics as a single, integrated engineering problem, with musical performance as the end goal.

Rather than assembling systems from third-party components, Wilson Benesch develops its loudspeakers as complete, resolved systems, allowing engineering intent to be carried through every stage of design and manufacture.

Materials & structures

At the heart of the Fibonacci Series is a biocomposite enclosure structure, developed through a 4.5-year pan-European research programme and publicly documented under the SSUCHY Project. This work explored sustainable composite materials and advanced structural behaviour, forming the foundation of Wilson Benesch’s enclosure technology today.

A key advantage of the biocomposite enclosure is its ability to be relatively thin compared to wooden or aluminium structures, while offering superior damping and energy control. This allows internal air volume to be maximised for the drive units without increasing external dimensions, reducing the cabinet’s own sonic contribution and improving bass efficiency, transient clarity and overall neutrality.

Precision machining & hand assembly

Key structural and mechanical components are produced using precision CNC machining, enabling extremely tight tolerances and repeatability across every loudspeaker. These parts are then hand assembled, with a level of bespoke fit and finish more commonly associated with high-performance automotive manufacture than traditional loudspeaker construction. This combination of digital precision and skilled manual assembly ensures exacting mechanical, acoustic and aesthetic standards, without compromise.

Proprietary drive units & tweeters

The Fibonacci Series employs entirely Wilson Benesch–designed and manufactured drive units and tweeters. Motor systems, diaphragms, suspensions and assembly processes have evolved through more than 25 years of iterative design, allowing mechanical, electrical and acoustic behaviour to be resolved together as a unified system. This ensures coherence, timing accuracy and consistency of voicing across the range.

Engineering in service of music

While these processes are deeply technical, their purpose is simple: to serve music. By controlling materials, manufacture and assembly internally, Wilson Benesch translates engineering decisions directly into musical expression, preserving scale, dynamics and tonal integrity without artificial emphasis.

At The Bristol Show 2026, these principles will be demonstrated through the Fibonacci Series entry models, Discovery 3zero and Horizon, presented on the same system to allow clear comparison of how identical engineering foundations are expressed at different physical scales.

Visitors are invited to experience both the musical result and the engineering discipline behind it in the calm surroundings of the first-floor Conservatory.
