JICO Launches SKRATCH 101 Stylus

JICO Launches SKRATCH 101 – An Affordable New Stylus for Aspiring DJs…

Japanese stylus manufacturer JICO has announced the launch of the SKRATCH 101, a new entry-level stylus set developed to give first-time DJs the tools they need to begin their journey into turntablism. Available now at £79.99 (set of two styli), the SKRATCH 101 delivers the precision and reliability of JICO engineering at an accessible price.

The name “101” is inspired by introductory college courses in the US – the first class you take when starting something new. True to its name, the SKRATCH 101 is designed to be the first stylus a beginner DJ reaches for when learning the fundamentals of mixing, scratching, and beat juggling.

A Stylus Designed for the Next Generation
The SKRATCH 101 was created in response to the growing demand for a high-quality, vinyl-safe stylus that beginners can afford. Its natural ruby tip – harder than sapphire but softer than diamond – provides durability, stable tracking, and smoother groove contact, protecting records during practice sessions and supporting DJs as they refine their hand control.

Whether you’re experimenting with standard vinyl or using a Digital Vinyl System (DVS), the SKRATCH 101 ensures reliable contact and consistent feedback, even during backspins, fast scratches, and cueing. Unlike many budget alternatives, it inherits design and engineering principles from JICO’s higher-end models, making it tough enough for practice while still preserving sound quality.

Technical Highlights:

Stylus tip: natural ruby, spherical (0.3 mm)
Frequency response: 20 Hz – 20 kHz
Output voltage: 5.0 – 8.0 mV
Tracking force: 3.5 g – 4.5 g
Compatible with JICO cartridges (J44A-7, J44D, J50, IMPACT, Clipper) and legacy Shure M44-7/M44G

Made for DJs, Inspired by DJs
The SKRATCH 101 was developed after JICO’s leadership visited the Beat Junkie Institute of Sound in Los Angeles, where students of all ages dedicate themselves to mastering the art of DJing. Seeing this passion first-hand inspired JICO to create a product that makes scratching and turntablism more accessible.

“Every time I meet young DJs, I’m reminded that supporting the next generation is essential for the future of DJ culture,” says Yukihiro Nakagawa, President of JICO. “The SKRATCH 101 was designed to give beginners a stylus they can trust – affordable, durable, and vinyl-safe.”
