Campfire Audio has announced a new, premium, portable hi-fi solution: the Campfire Audio Relay DAC/AMP. With flexible features combined with the power to drive headphones to new heights, Relay is the perfect fusion of form and function, offering an elevated listening experience, anywhere – for less than £250.
“Relay is the culmination of an exhaustive and expansive search for the best sonic qualities, form factor, and functionality possible to meet the demands of modern, portable hi-fi,” explains Ken Ball, Founder and Lead Acoustic Designer of Campfire Audio. He adds: “Our hope is that it gives users the high-level of performance they expect from bulkier devices, with the flexibility of variable parameters and the convenience of a compact, robust form factor.”
Reflecting Campfire’s dedication to striking design and pristine sonic performance, Relay features the powerful AKM 4493 SEQ DAC chip, wrapped in a precision-machined, lightweight, aluminium housing. The AKM 4493 was chosen following an extensive evaluation process, selected for its technical prowess and engaging sound, which imparts just the right amount of colour and a touch of a classic analogue sound signature.
On top of Relay’s strong sonic foundation is a range of features, helping users further dial-in performance and easily integrate it into their portable hi-fi setup. Relay features USB-Cconnectivity and is compatible with Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android platforms, allowing it to pair with a wide range of devices – from smartphones and tablets to laptops, gaming PCs and beyond. Paired with both 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced outputs, users can easily select the best match for their high-end earphones.
Relay’s powerful sonic performance is augmented by customisable parameters, including selectable high/low gain, six filter modes, and variable bit rates up to 32 bit / 768 kHz. With PCM & DSD playback compatibility, a precise, 60-step built-in volume control, and built-in media playback controls, users can simply and dynamically control their listening experience to their exact specifications.
Rounding off Relay’s talents are its accompanying range of accessories: a pleasingly short (6cm) USB-C to USB-C cable; microfibre cleaning cloth and a black cushioned Ripstop bag.
